At 6pm yesterday a young man called with Thames Hospice T shirt. I told him our support went to charities of the serious illnesses in our family. His reaction was to comment on my accent and then ask me if I could smell a barbecue nearby. Bizarre! My intuition told me that either he was ineptly trying to scam money or casing our house to see who lives there and hoping for more time to look in. We are in a quiet cul de sac and am aware of the gang operating locally targeting older people, and wonder if this is a ploy they use? I may be wrong but please be careful. Joanna Church

I think he was genuine - he seemed to be pleased to know that we do actually support this charity on an annual basis.

I have checked with Thames Hospice this morning and they confirmed they are canvassing in this area. I, too, was visited yesterday by a charming and polite man. I appreciate there are too many scams going around but these people are legitimate. It’s a shame the man who called on you seemed rather strange making odd comments which naturally raised alarm bells. Valerie Nicholson

These are legitimate fund raisers. They were here last year. As you can see the gentlemen that called yesterday is listed as is his last fund door to door fund raising activity. https://smiledb.co.uk/activefundraisers.php?campaign=df57a221c86a25261f94ba3491ce892e
